Some Contemporary British Painters. Wildenstein & Co. Ltd., 147 New Bond Street, London, 26 Nov. until 24 Dec., 1947.

£55.00

List of 72 works by nine artists, including Clifford Frith, Derek Hill, George Hooper, Clara Klinghoffer, John Lake, A. Levett-Prinsep, Susan Palmer, James Stroudley, Edward Wakeford, Paul Wyeth.

Catalogue number 8, Derek Hill’s “Circus at Keel” has been annotated in pen with the name “Valerie Hobson (Mrs Haverloch-Allen“ making her the likely purchaser. Born in Larne, Northern Ireland and educated at RADA, Hobson's early films included The Bride of Frankenstein (1935). In 1939 Hobson married Anthony Havelock-Allan, who produced several of her films. They divorced in 1952. Hobson retired from the screen following her marriage to politician John Profumo in 1954. Catalogue number 12 Derek Hill’s “Still life” is annotated with the name “R Peto…[illegible]”.

It is probable, having compared them to known examples of Derek Hill’s handwriting, that these annotations were made by Derek Hill himself as reminders of the names of purchasers of these works. The catalogue likely came to Rod Hill’s library via his uncle Derek.
