Lorenzo Viani was born in Viareggio. He trained in Florence and Lucca under Giovanni Fattore and Plinio Nomellini. Viani’s subjects were workers, including fishermen and marble quarriers. He spent time in psychiatric hospitals and among the poor, painting the mentally ill, social outcasts and sea widows. In the post-war period, despite his anarchist background, Viani was active within the broader cultural framework of Fascism. Humanitarian concerns are also central to Viani’s literary works including: Angiò uomo d'acqua (1928); I Vàgeri (The Wanderers, 1926); Il figlio del pastore (1930).
