Gabriele D’Annunzio, Laus Vitae, Delle Laudi, MAIA, Libro Primo, Volume Primo. Fratelli Treves Editore, Milano, 1906. Cover illustration by by Adolfo de Carolis.

MAIA is the first book of D’Annunzio poetic cycle, Laudi del cielo, del mare, della terra e degli eroi (Praises of the Sky, Sea, Earth, and Heroes) by Gabriele D'Annunzio, first published in 1903-1904 by Fratelli Treves.

This 1906 reprint of the first book in the cycle includes Maia (Canto Amebeo della Guerra)—often translated as the Amoeba Song of War—the title of which refers to an ancient Greek style of "exchange singing," where two or more parties compete or alternate verses. In this specific section of the poem there is a

conflict between the vincitori (victors) and the vinti (the vanquished) who cry out to the gods for protection, lamenting the destruction of their land, the slaughter of their youth, and the overwhelming "messenger of death”. The Victors respond with taunts and a celebration of their dominance, glory, and the "sublime hour" of combat. The poem is deeply influenced by Nietzschean philosophy, particularly the idea of the Ubermensch (superman). D'Annunzio portrays war not merely as a political event but as a vital, aesthetic force that separates the strong from the weak

D’Annunzio’s key themes in the Laudi cycle include the Superhuman, Panism, Paganism and The Myth of Greece with the aim to combine modern Italian nationalism with the classical world.
