Based on an episode from Dante’s Inferno and set in the 13th century, D’Annunzio’s Malatesta trilogy was presented for the first time at the Te atro Costanzi in Rome on December 9th 1901. Written for D'Annunzio's lover Eleonora Duse who played the title role, the play tells the story of Francesca da Rimini who falls in love with her husband's brother. D’Annunizio was an Italian writer, poet, journalist, and playwright. His ideas and aesthetics held a prominent place in Italian literature and political life in the late 19th and early 20th century influencing the rise of Italian fascism.
