Pietro Annigoni (1910–1988) was openly anti-fascist and maintained a "rebel" persona during the rise of Mussolini, facing ostracism from the Italian cultural establishment until after World War II. While his art rejected modernism for Renaissance tradition, he was not a state-approved artist during the Fascist era.
