André Breton’s What is Surrealism? published by Faber & Faber in 1936. Number 43 in the Criterion Miscellany series edited by T.S. Eliot (Herbert read was unofficial assistant editor). ‘Specially prepared’ by Breton himself to coincide with the first International Surrealist exhibition held at the New Burlington Galleries, London, 11 June – 4 July 1936. As Alan Young writes in Dada and After: Extremist Modernism and English Literature, What is Surrealism “represents the stage in the development of Surrealism when English interest in the movement was at its greatest.”
