Catalogue of the exhibition held at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam in April - June 1967. Catalog no. 414.

'In the early part of this decade, English painters took advantage of the fact that the language of modern art had developed into an elaborate synthesis which embraces all extremes from De Stijl abstraction to Surrealism. They exploited this in a very direct way—extracting elements from idioms which would at one time have seemed mutually exclusive and combining them by means of a personal syntax. The new English sculpture represents a second stage in this revolution. Familiarity with the new synthesis and the linguistic ambiguities it implies, has been, for the sculptors, less a source of invention than a stimulus to detachment. Freed of the dogmas of early modernism they have been able to concern themselves with the archetypal problem of sculpture as a thing in itself.’

Text by Christopher Finch in English and Dutch. Artists include: David Annesley, David Hall, Michael Bolus, Phillip King, Tim Scott, William Tucker, Isaac Witkin, Derrick Woodham. Design by Wim Crouwel and Josje Pollmann.
