Catalogue of a group exhibition curated by Christos M. Joachimides held at the Hannover Kunstverein, 31 March to 13 May 1973. Includes the first published appearance of Joseph Beuys’ concept of ‘soziale Plastik’.

The exhibition was re-staged, although much altered, as Art into Society – Society into Art at the ICA London in 1974 organised by the then ICA curator, Norman Rosenthal, and Christos M. Joachimides. A colloquium was held in Berlin in April 1974 in which the artists and curators of Art in the Political Struggle reflected on that exhibition and decided how to stage and frame the London show.

Includes 4 loosely inserted sheets:

1. Wolf Vostell: Mania. Ein dé– Collage Environment, 1973. A text piece describing Vostell’s decollage environment work for the show and instructions for a related happening involving animal brains.

2. Hans Haacke: Besucherprofil [Visitor Profile] – Kunstverein Hannover. “These questions and your answers belong to the art work by Hans Haacke, created during the exhibition Art in Political Struggle from March 30 to May 13, 1973. Please check the appropriate answers and place the questionnaire in the designated box.”

3. Joseph Beuys: Organisation für direkte Demokratie” = Organisation for direct democracy. A folded A4 sheet titled, “The Time of Political Parties in Over.”

4. Errrata note
