Rodin et Son Oeuvre: Numero Special de 'La Plume’. Published by Edition de "Le Plume", Paris, 1900
In 1900 Rodin staged a major survey exhibition of his work in a purpose built pavilion at the Place de l’Alma in Paris. Rodin’s decision to show plaster versions of his work presented in the manner they would appear in the sculptor’s studio, rather than original carvings, marked “a threshold moment in the history of modern sculpture” (1). The exhibition established Rodin as an international star and was the inspiration for the Tate Gallery’s 2021 exhibition The Making of Rodin.
This special issue of the journal La Plume entirely dedicated to Rodin was published in 1900 to coincide with Rodin’s Place de l’Alma exhibition acting as an exhibition guide and explanation of his work. It includes more than 50 images and extensive essays by an unprecedented group of the most influential European writers and critics of the time, including Mirbeau, Cocquiot, Mockel, Mauclair, Morice, Geffroy, Simmons, Marx, Harris, Veidaux, Fontainas, and others.
