Lawrence Alloway, Nine Abstract Artists, 1954 (First Edition)

£350.00
Sold

Critically important publication produced in London in 1954 when hostility towards abstraction was at its height in Britain. Robert Adams, Terry Frost, Adrian Heath, Anthony Hill, Roger Hilton, Kenneth Martin, Mary Martin, Victor Pasmore, and William Scott approached the ICA curator Lawrence Alloway to write the introduction. Published by Alec Tiranti whose artist materials shop in Fitzrovia published a number of interesting small books on art at the time. The statements and artworks included were chosen by the nine artists themselves. Other examples of this important book are held in public collections throughout the world, including the British Library and the State Library of New South Wales, Sydney.

Click here to listen to Alan Bowness, director of the Tate Gallery from 1980 to 1988, discussing the publication of Nine Abstract Artists in a recording on the British Library website, part of the Voices of Art Series.
