The catalogue introduction likens the exhibition to a traditional French bal de têtes (a ball for which guests would be dressed elegantly but with grotesque masks or likenesses on their heads).
Galerie A. Chave was founded by Alphone Chave in Vence in 1947. The gallery was recognised by the Pompidou in 2019 for its important contribution to outsider art.
