1972 Facsimile edition of the Dada review, Z

£45.00
Sold

Stapled booklet, The Colorado College Studies, Z1 with Notes, (1972) and accompanying facsimile of issue one of the Dada review, Z.

Founded by the Belgian writer and poet, Paul Dermée , the Dada review ‘Z’ appeared in March 1920 at the height of Dada activity in Paris. Z was originally published by au Sans Pareil, the publishing house founded in 1919 by René Hilsum (1895-1990), the first publisher of the Surrealists. (Hilsum's eponymous bookstore and gallery was opened a year later, in 1920, on Avenue Kléber in the 16th. Max Ernst held his first solo exhibition there in 1921.)

Derméer’s Z is the only Dada review to have had only one issue, along with Projecteur (May 1920) founded and edited by the Dada poet Celine Arnaud (also a contributor to Z) to whom Dermée was married. Z includes texts by the core members of early Parisian Dada: Paul Dermée, Theodor Fraenkel, Georges Ribemont-Dessaignes, Tristan Tzara, G. Ferré, André Breton, Louis Aragon, Cecile Arnauld, Francis Picabia, Philippe Soupault, and Paul Éluard. It contains Francis Picabia’s famous assertion “‘If you read André Gide aloud for ten minutes, your breath will stink’ as well as the poem Auric-Satie A La Noix de, Picabia’s biting word-play revealing the Dadaist’s initial hesitation towards the composer Eric Satie because of his association with Jean Cocteau.
