Homage to Paul Cezanne (1839 - 1906) Wildenstein & Co., London, July 1939.
Catalogue of a major loan exhibition "Homage to Paul Cézanne (1839-1906)" held at the Wildenstein Gallery in London in July 1939 to commemorate the centenary of the artist's birth. List of lenders, foreword by George Wildenstein, short biography of Cezanne by John Rewald (who probably also supplied the notes which are printed beneath the details of each work which is listed). At the time, Rewald was a young, emerging Cézanne scholar, having already published his book Cézanne et Zola in 1936. His expertise was recognised by the Wildenstein gallery who enlisted him to provide the scholarly text for the catalogue accompanying the significant "Homage" exhibition. This role was an important step in Rewald's career as the preeminent Cézanne expert. His work on this exhibition and others contributed to the extensive research he conducted for his eventual, multi-volume catalogue raisonné of Cézanne's paintings and watercolors, published posthumously in the 1980s and 1990s.  This catalogue serves as a primary historical record of the specific pieces displayed.
