In 1947 Victor Pasmore suddenly abandoned visual representation to develop a purely abstract approach to painting. His first solo exhibition of this new abstract work was shown at the Redfern Gallery, London, in 1948. Reviewing the exhibition at the time, the art critic Herbert Read described Pasmore’s new style as ‘The most revolutionary event in post-war British art’.
