Patrick Hayman–an artist associated with the St. Ives school–conceived of this self-published art journal as "a meeting-ground between poet and painter, sculptor and architect”. Edited by Hayman between 1958 and 1963, The Painter & Sculptor presented “humanistic figurative art”, neglected 20th century artists, and often published research-based articles by practicing artists. Born in London in 1915, Hayman spent his formative years in New Zealand. Several issues include the work of Australian and New Zealand artists. .
Patrick Hayman formed a close friendship with Peter Lanyon during his time in St Ives; sharing a deep reverence for land, sea and sky, as well as a shared admiration for the work of Alfred Wallis and Christopher Wood.
