











Matisse, Picasso, Braque, Laurens. Kunstnernes hus, Oslo, 1938.
Rare catalogue for an ambitious touring exhibition of works by Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, and Henri Laurens, shown across Scandinavian countries in 1938, including the Kunstnernes hus, Oslo; Norwegian State Museum of Art, Copenhagen; and Liljevalch's Art Gallery, Stockholm.
The exhibition included Picasso’s Geurnica, 1937 (illustrated in the catalogue across a double page) which travelled directly to Oslo from its inaugural unveiling at the Spanish Pavilion at the 1937 Paris International World’s Fair.
The catalogue, edited by Gunnar Larsen (1900-1958) the Norwegian writer and journalist for Dagbladet, includes texts by Leo Swane (Matisse), Walther Halvorsen (Braque), Georges Duthuit (Laurens), Ragnar Hoppe (Picasso), and is Illustrated with 20 b/w images including portraits of the artists by Hungarian-born French photographer and artist Rogi André (1900-1970). The rear pages include a list of 118 works. Matisse, Picasso and Barque were presented 103 large paintings. Laurens showed 15 sculptures and works on paper.
The Norwegian art writer and critic Walther Halvorsen (1887–1972) organised the exhibition in collaboration with the Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet. Halvorsen had been student of Henri Matisse in Paris in 1909 before establishing a career as a critic writing for publications including Aftenposten, Verdens Gang, and Dagbladet. He was instrumental in disseminating French art in Scandinavian countries in the early Twentieth-century.
