Published in 1977 by Lisson Gallery, Studio International, and Paul David Press, Four Basic Kinds of Lines & Colour is an early example of Sol LeWitt’s process-based works in which each image correlates to a pre-determined system of procedures executed in all possible combinations.

The book followed the publication of two earlier works, Four Basic Kinds of Straight Lines (1969) and Four Basic Colours and their Combinations (1971), and merges the two systems described in the earlier publications.

The book first outlines all combinations of the two systems in an initial two-page key, then each spread presents the two systems side by side: all possible combinations of overlaid black lines on the left (vertical, horizontal, right-facing diagonal, left-facing diagonal) and the colour system (yellow, black, red, blue) on the right.

A facsimile reprint was co-published in 2019 by Printed Matter, Inc. & Primary Information, on occasion of the exhibition, Book as System.
