Catalogue of “Bruce McLean: Retrospective - King for a day and 999 other pieces/works/things, etc. 1969” held at the Tate Gallery London, for one day only, 11 March 1972. Published by Situation Publications, London, February 1972. Including a loosely inserted original signed drawing on lined tissue paper and a staple-in piece of string used during the performance-action “Take a line for a walk piece”. The catalogue includes proposals for 1000 pieces. The exhibition installation included 1000 copies of the catalogue displayed on the floor of the Tate Gallery. Visitors to the exhibition were invited to buy a copy and take it away, eventually leaving the room empty.
Originally issued with a white paper sticker which sealed the book closed (this copy’s seal now broken) that reads 'Another Major Breakthrough Piece / Note Casual Tat’. Also attached to the cover, a museum tag printed with the text “King for a Day Piece” / A Proposal Work 1969 realised Saturday 11th March 1972 Piece / Another Minor Pre-dated Piece. Tate Gallery label to the rear cover lists this at cat. no. 43.
