The saying "photography is a universal language" is a truism often used and accepted without verification. My aim for this project was to elicit a visual self-portrait of Japan which would be a genuine Japanese photographic expression by and of the Japanese. The result in the exhibition and this book Japan: A Self-Portrait is purely that, and is here for you, the viewer, to contemplate. Our thanks for the fulfilment of our aim for this project go to the sponsors, who have set no limits on self-expression, the photographers who spoke, and Shoji Yamagishi, who heard and orchestrated their voices. – Cornell Capa, Executive Director International Center of Photography
