Group of catalogues and ephemera including the catalogue of an exhibition of works by Roger Hilton held at Mendel Art Gallery, Saskatoon, Canada, 24 December 1981 – 24 January 1982. With a gift inscription dated 1992 from the curator Dr David Brown to the artist Rod (Roderic) Hill, a collector of Roger Hilton’s work, friend of Rose Hilton and champion of The St Ives School. Inscription reads “To Rod Hill = a fellow R Hilton freak. With best wishes and good collecting David Brown 5.4.92”
Dr David Brown was an important supporter of both Roger Hilton and Rose Hilton’s work. An exhibition he curated of works on paper by Roger Hilton in Edinburgh in 1973 lead to him becoming an assistant curator at Tate. The interest generated by the Edinburgh show resulted in the Roger Hilton Retrospective at the Serpentine Gallery in 1974. Following Roger Hilton’s death, Dr Brown was a strong supporter of Rose Hilton’s return to her own highly acclaimed practice. He bequeathed a large number of works by both artists to UK public institutions.
Loosely inserted is a letter dated June 2018 from Rose Hilton to Rod Hill and a pencil sketch of a nude by an unknown hand, possibly by Rose Hilton.
