Very scarce catalogue designed by Richard Hamilton for an exhibition of sculpture organised by art historian Ralph Holland in 1957 for the Hatton Gallery. “If the Exhibition has a theme it is that of the sculptor’s response to representing the human personality through the head and face…”. 42 works are illustrated in black and white including early carvings from New Zealand, New Ireland, Solomon Islands, Luba, and New Britain; Egyptian Pharaoh heads; Egypto-Roman and Romano-British stone heads; 8th century Northumbrian and English Christian fragments; a 16th century German altarpiece; concluding with more recent works by late 19th and early 20th century sculptures including three Jacob Epstein heads and Stephen Tomlin’s portrait head of Lytton Strachey.

All the works shown were borrowed from collections in Northumberland and Durham. A list of lenders is provided.
