Gary Gilmore Memorial Society. Genesis Porridge, Cosey Fanni Tutti, Monte Cazazza. 1977 Coum Transmissions.

£50.00

Gary Gilmore gained international attention for demanding the implementation of his death sentence for two murders he had admitted to committing in Utah. He was executed by a firing squad in 1977. In response, Cosey Fanni Tutti and Genesis P. Orridge of COUM Transmissions/Throbbing Gristle , along with the artist Monte Cazzaza, formed the Gary Gilmore Memorial Society. For this postcard work, the three artists posed blindfolded and tied to chairs with loaded guns pointed at them in the manner of Gilmore's execution. Monte Cazazza had sent out photos of himself in an electric chair on the day of the execution. One of these was mistakenly printed in a Hong Kong newspaper as the real execution.

Tate acquired the archive of Genesis P-Orridge in 2009-10.

Collections:

• National Gallery of Canada Library and Archives, Art Metropole Collection. Art Metropole is an artist-run centre founded in 1974 by General Idea.

• University of Iowa Library, Crane/Friedman Correspondence Art Collection.

• The Original artwork for the postcard is in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London – Harley Lond papers collection.
