“With some 3,800 buildings, spread along the seashore or on mountain passes, some no more than a shelter, others resembling little cities, the Colonie constitute a singularly Italian definition of modernity, which reflects social, cultural, political and architectural issues. The demands of the government, which refined the traditional programme from a general to a highly specific and authoritarian mechanism, interacting with the site and the rhythm of the occupants, produced a variety of specific responses which reflected the cross-currents of the developing Italian Rationalist manner.”
