“ This book records the first of a new series of exhibitions planned by the Welsh Committee of the Arts Council. The aim is to provide a basis for understanding pictures rather different from that contained in conventional art criticism. During the work on the exhibition our belief that it was worth while was confirmed by the enthusiasm and interest shown by the four artists involved. We are most grateful to them for the tremendous amount of help they gave. Merlyn Evans, Ivon Hitchens, Victor Pasmore and Alan Davie were approached because their work is dissimilar and we wanted to see if there were parallel differences in their surroundings. As it turned out the choice provided the ideal basis for the kind of experiment we wanted to carry out.”
