Catalogue of The New Generation: 1965, an important exhibition of sculpture curated by Bryan Robertson at the Whitechapel Gallery London which brought to wide public attention the work of Phillip King, together with David Annesley, Michael Bolus, Tim Scott, William Tucker and Isaac Witkin. The term ‘new generation’ was subsequently generally applied to their work. All these artists had been taught by Sir Anthony Caro at St Martins School of Art in London and are sometimes referred to as School of Caro. In 1960 Caro had developed a completely new form of abstract sculpture using steel beams, sheets and tubes, welded and bolted together and painted in bright industrial colours.

Cover photograph by Lord Snowdon. Colour and black and white photographs by John Goldblatt, with the exception of catalogue Nos. 12, 27, 31 and the portrait of Isaac Witkin, which are by Errol Jackson.

Also includes a news clipping of Eric Newton’s review of the exhibition from the Guardian, March 12 1965. This was the last review written by Newton for the Guardian before he died.
