Important catalogue in the history of feminist art with Méret Oppenheim’s Object (Le Dejuner en fourrure) 1936, on the cover. Published by The Feminist Art Program at CalArts in 1975. Edited by Miriam Schapiro, Molly Rhodes, Melissa Lettick and designed by Molly Rhodes, Victoria Nodiff, Pam Aril, Nancy Hirsh and Ava Kligman. Includes the work of 76 women artists. Each artist is given a full page with most entries including an image of the work, a portrait of the artist and the artist’s statement. Linga Benglis’ entry reads “My work is my statement.”   

The Feminist Art Program (FAP) was established at CalArts by Judy Chicago and Miriam Schapiro in 1971. The program, which ran until 1975, was among the earliest in the United States to offer courses in female art history which were taught exclusively by women for women. It significantly advanced the visibility and recognition of women artists.

The inside front cover is printed with the details of Méret Oppenheim’s Object (Le Dejuner en fourrure) . The artist’s name is misspelt “Merit”. 

The inside back cover reads:

“Merit Oppenheim’s (sic) “Teacup” is famous, yet few people realize this is the work of a women. Like most women artists, little has been written about her. The ‘Teacup’ has become a symbol of an era in Art while the body of her work is invisible. Why must she remain anonymous?” 

Contents: 

Introduction by Deena Metzger, the American writer, healer and feminist scholar, whose closing salutation is “With revolutionary love”.

A letter from the oragnisers of the Feminist Art Program to women artists inviting contributions.
