This is a quite rare 1924 English translation of a title also published in French and Italian editions by the Rome based publisher Editions de "Valori Plastici" which also published a periodical of the same name in Rome from 1918 to 1921. The magazine ceased circulation in 1921 but the editor and publisher, Mario Broglio (1891–1948), appears to have continued publishing small volumes until at least 1924 when this edition on Picasso’s work was released. It is part of a series of illustrated titles published the same year which included George Grosz, Giotto by Carlo Carra, Soffici by Carlo Carra, Archipenko by Maurice Raynal, Zadkine by Maurice Raynal.
The author of this title, Waldemar George (10 January 1893 – 27 October 1970), was a Polish-born art historian and critic active primarily in France. He was instrumental in introducing Eastern European art to Twentieth-century Western readers and was active in the promotion of the School of Paris – he coined the term “Neo-Romantics” when reviewing an exhibition of former students of Vuillard, Vallotton and Denis. Waldemar George wrote an important early monograph on de Chirico in 1928. His book on Picasso’s drawings was published by Éditions des Quatre Chemins, Paris, in 1926.
