Art For Society: Contemporary British Art with a Social or Political Purpose. Whitechapel Art Gallery, London, 1978.

£40.00

"Art for Society: Contemporary British Art with a Social or Political Purpose" was an exhibition held at the Whitechapel Art Gallery in London from May 10 to June 18, 1978. The exhibition aimed to showcase British art that addressed social or political issues. It was a significant event, as it was organized through a public call for submissions, rather than relying solely on invited artists. This approach resulted in a diverse selection of works reflecting a wide range of perspectives on the relationship between art and society.

The exhibition was organized by a committee including members of the Whitechapel Art Gallery and other individuals with expertise in art and social issues. They received submissions from over 300 artists and ultimately curated a selection of works that demonstrated the breadth and depth of contemporary British art engaged with social and political themes. The exhibition catalog, also titled "Art for Society: Contemporary British Art with a Social or Political Purpose," was published by the Whitechapel Art Gallery. The catalog includes illustrations and descriptions of the works exhibited.
